This was my first thought - but then reflecting on it, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is more common than many of us realize. A lot of people rent boats with little to no experience. A lot of people are idiots. Add alcohol and I wouldn’t be surprised if this isn’t unusual.

This is why you attach the engine kill lanyard if your alone on a boat. I put it on anytime I was at a higher speeds in my bass boat. Mine had a foot throttle you get tossed no way to swim fast enough even with the engine idling. I've hit wake didn't see been lifted high enough hang on to he steering wheel.
